Our Approach
Advancing Equity & Equality in Public Budgets
Our approach entails developing a rigorous body of evidence on public finance, developing citizens’ and civil society capacities to deliberate on budget decisions and engage with governments, and partnering with development partners, governments, civil society actors and citizens to co-create sustainable models in the PFM space.
Our River of Life
The Beginning
Bajeti Hub began its journey in Kenya just before 2010, as a country office of the International Budget Partnership (IBP). By 2013, Bajeti Hub had launched full-time in-country programs and staff under IBP, and began our flagship budget training programs targeting CSOs while also providing technical support to the government.
This initiative, aimed to take advantage of Kenya’s major public finance reforms that came with the 2010 Constitution, through energising citizen and CSO engagement with budget processes. Our long-term commitment to work in Kenya was confirmed when IBP Kenya became a fully registered national organisation in April 2014, marking a significant milestone in our journey.
Sparking Change
In 2015, we started the County Budget Transparency Survey which has grown to one of the most comprehensive sub-national budget openness’s surveys in the World.
With a larger team, we embarked on a localization process to deepen our impact. A key part of this was the Strengthening Public Accountability for Results and Knowledge (SPARK) program, which kicked-off in 2018. In the program, we trained over 100 county budget facilitators and supported the training of more than 1000 community budget facilitators.
This included expanding technical support to CSOs across Kenya’s 47 counties, expanding our inclusion work and rapidly strengthening our internal systems, and fundraising efforts.
The Work Deepens
By 2021, Bajeti Hub as growing inside and out, with a larger internal team and a growing base of funding partners to support our work.
As a number of key partnerships took shape our sector-focused work deepened, exploring the intersection between budgets and social sectors anchored on our belief in making budgets work for specific vulnerable groups like children, women, and persons with disabilities.
The Rebirth
Today, Bajeti Hub supports five regional budget hubs that are the organising platform for budget advocacy work at national and county level. Over more than a decade, Bajeti Hub has carved out a unique role as an analytical and advocacy resource on public finance in Kenya, influencing both local and global norms.
